Ratitovec is one of the less known mountains in Slovenia but it deserves more recognition. Photographers will love the views from the top of the mountain. There are views on Julian Alps, including Mt Triglav, the highest peak of Slovenia. There are also great views towards Kamnik-Savinja Alps, Karavanke Alps and all the nearby peaks of Škofja Loka Hills. To the southeast the views extend all the way to Mt Snežnik and beyond.
Ratitovec has multiple peaks and the naming can be a bit confusing. Altemaver is the highest peak with 1678m above the sea level. Other peaks are named Kreman, Gladki vrh and Kosmati vrh. The best viewpoint for photographers is Altemaver because of its interesting ridge. This is great for wide angle shots for an interesting foreground. There are great views from the nearby of the mountain hut (Krekova koča). The sharp rocks just below the hut are also a great foreground – you will pass them if climbing up from Ptrovč or Torka directions.
Because of its easy access, Ratitovec is popular year round. For photographers, the best time to hike is in Autumn or in winter. Autumn often offers great conditions when the clouds are lower than the peak – one feels to be in heaven. And in winter the wind often decorates the mountain hut with thick snow cover – it feels one is in the middle of arctic!

Some other hiking suggestions for photographers with similar views in the area include Mt Blegoš, Mt Porezen and Soriška planina. All these feature interesting views that are a little bit different, are easy to moderate to get to and there is a mountain hut where one can spend a night.
