Slovenia is a highly popular destination for landscape and nature photographers. I can confirm this, as I have been leading photography workshops here for the last 16 years. Every year, thousands of photographers from around the world visit my home country for this pursuit. Most of them come in the autumn season, capturing images in Triglav National Park and at a select few hilltop churches. Winter is also a favored time, especially when blessed with fresh snow and cold temperatures. I regularly conduct photography workshops during these two seasons, but I increasingly enjoy photographing Slovenia in spring. Read on to learn why this is the case.
The places I enjoy photographing most in spring are off the usual tourist routes. Even many photographers don’t know these areas at all. But imagine charming traditional villages with picturesque churches, vineyards, rolling hills, blossoming fruit trees, more hilltop churches, grazing domestic animals, and local people tending their fields and gardens. Nothing grand like the sharp peaks of the Julian Alps, the crystal-clear Soča River, or the iconic Lake Bled. Just roads less traveled, peace from tourist crowds, and genuine hospitality!
Where can I find these places? Where should I explore? I can’t specify particular spots per se. To me, the most appealing thing to do is simply to go out and explore! What happens, happens. Serendipity. I usually enjoy visiting the regions of Dolenjska, Bela Krajina, Kozjansko, Obsotelje, and Štajerska. And, of course, the Polhov Gradec hills, which I consider my backyard (I grew up there). These are very different from what a typical visitor to Slovenia experiences. This is what makes this area even more unique and enticing for photography! I still can’t comprehend how many photos can be taken there—each one unique and original.
Slovenia in Spring – Photos
Join me for Slovenia in Spring Workshop!
When I posted this year’s spring photos, quite a few people asked if I’d be organising a workshop during this season. That got me thinking—and I’ve come up with a great idea.
In April 2027, I’ll be leading a Slovenia in Spring photography workshop. It will be a bit different from my usual ones. We’ll focus on lesser-known locations, away from the crowds. You can expect scenes like the ones in the photos above—quiet landscapes, blooming nature, and authentic countryside.
We’ll also meet some locals who make interesting crafts, enjoy food that’s home-grown, local, and organic, and taste some excellent wines and brandies. The group will be small, and we’ll travel in one comfortable van. There won’t be a fixed itinerary—we’ll go where conditions are best for photography at that moment.
This will be a unique experience, something no other photographer offers in this way.
