Recently I visited Kozjansko region of Slovenia. I spent two days there to photograph landscapes and fruit tree blossoms. I was based near Olimje, a small town famous for its monastery and the nearby spa at Podčetrtek. This is a good base to explore the area as it has good choice of accommodation and some fine restaurants.
This was only my second visit as a photographer and I only knew a few nice locations to photograph. This is why I contacted Amadeja, a local photographer whose photos I admire so much. She was keen and we quickly agreed to meet and go shoot together.
Kozjansko is relatively a small region, close to the border of Croatia. Together with Obsotelje (named after Sotla river) it represents an agricultural area of Slovenia, known for its apples, traditional rural landscapes and excellent food. Photography here can be tricky. It is very hard to find the right country road or that elusive view of the vineyards and cherry trees! Luckily Amadeja knows every little turn and any place with photo opportunities. Without her guidance, I would find 3-4 places, the rest would be driving around aimlessly, searching.
I am quite happy with the trip, despite weather conditions that were far from perfect (hazy, no mists or clouds). At least I have good reason to return. Most likely in Autumn, when vineyards turn into yellows and reds. Anyways, here below are some of my favourite photos.
There are no grand views, sharp mountains or big monuments in Kozjansko. However, the intimate scenes, rural landscapes, traditional cottages and nice nature will make any landscape photographer happy. I will be coming back in different seasons for photography. And with my family to enjoy local delicacies and exploring the roads less traveled.
Here are some useful links to help you plan visit the area.
