Autumn is a prime time for forest photography and one of the best places in Slovenia is Kočevski Rog. The area is located roughly between Kočevje and Dolenjske Toplice and features one of the best preserved forests of Europe. I headed there in the peak season for autumn colours and spent two days photographing nature and historical sites.
I have been to Kočevski Rog many times and everytime I go there I discover something new. My passion is nature so I am looking mostly for natural places and things to photograph. Spring is a wonderful time to visit and so is autumn. This time I was looking for the best autumn colours in the forest. One of the locations I went is the highest peak, Veliki Rog (watch my vlog from the spring). This was the first time I could see the wider area as it was clear sky. It is amazing to see the vast area all covered in forest.
Beside the natural places I also visited two historical sites from Second World War, the partisan command hideout Baza 20 and the hidden hospital at Jelendol. Both places are an open air museum with well preserved wooden barracks. In autumn both sites look particularly beautiful.

Despite being totally wet as it was raining most of the time I enjoyed my time in the forest very much. There was no mists but the peak autumn colours were so beautiful that I managed a nice little portfolio of images that I like. This time I did not encounter any bears but I saw plenty of other animals such as fox, deer, hare and plenty of birds. At one of the waterholes I observed footprints of brown bear, wild boars and a deer. All this without meeting a single person!
Hopefully I inspired you to visit this secluded part of Slovenia. There are numerous trails there of different levels and there is no bad time to visit. The forest always inspires me and I hope we can preserve it for generations to come!
