The year 2020 is unlike any other in many ways. One big difference for me is that I am not leading any photo workshops this autumn in Slovenia. And I decided to photograph autumn colours a little bit differently. And above all, different places than usual. Only once I photographed autumn colours in Triglav national park, the rest was in less visited places of Slovenia. This is a selection of my favourite photos with short commentary.
PLEASE EXPAND THE PHOTOS TO SEE ALL
Soriška planina
Let me start with these two photos from Soriška planina. It was an unusual start of the season – the colours haven’t fully arrived yet and we got a large amount of snow. This created amazing scenery and you can find more snowy photos here.
A House on Idrijca River
I’ve driven past this house multiple times and it never caught my attention. Until this autumn when the trees coloured nicely. This shot ended up being one of my favourite of the season.
Trenta Valley
Even though I promised myself not to go to usual places in autumn I did a quick trip to Trenta valley. Mostly thanks for wonderful photos that Andreas Resch was teasing me with all the time. Definitely check his page!
Autumn in Slovenia – Kočevski Rog
Kočevski Rog is one of the most amazing forests in Slovenia. I have been there numerous times but never in peak season for autumn colours. Beside the forest itself, I explored some historical sites such as Baza 20 (partisan command HQ) and Jelendol hospital (both during WWII). Here are some of my shots I am happy with. Even though I didn’t have luck with mists, the colours were extremely beautiful.
Autumn in Slovenia – Vršič Pass
When driving over the pass I always observe the weather and look for interesting views. Here are two from this autumn. The left image of Mt Škrlatica was taken from the north side of the pass. And the misty shot of the trees on the rock was taken on my descent towards Soča river valley.
Autumn at Kočevsko
Late autumn in a forest. What a difference from the peak season. The reds replace yellows and greens. In combination with cool tones of the fog it creates almost magical atmosphere. Some people would say cursed forest, to me it is enchanted.
Autumn in Slovenia – Rašica
When I visited Rašica hill (popular hiking place near Ljubljana) it was all shrouded in low cloud. No grand views or sunrise, but for a moment I could see into the distance and got this nice forest shot. I haven’t noticed there is a church in the background until I edited the photo.
Farmhouse near Polhov Gradec
A telephoto shot from across the valley. This secluded farmhouse really stands out from the rest of the area. The colours look painterly, almost unreal. But this is precisely why I like this image!
Morning at Osolnik
A newly discovered gem of a location. And despite incredible views and picturesque church on the top, this is the photo I like the most.
Kog village
Kog is a small village in northeast of Slovenia, almost at Croatian border. The whole area features beautiful vineyards and there’s plenty to photograph. I had this photo visualised for a long time – since 2015 when I spent a few nights here with my photo workshop. This time the conditions were perfect, the forest, the vineyards and the sky – everything was in nice colour. And all this while sipping nice local wine 🙂
Vineyards from the sky
Here are five different aerial views on vineyards in Slovenia. The locations are as follows: Hrastovlje, Debeli Rtič, Jeruzalem, Zavrč and Vidošiči. It is amazing how elevated views change our perspective of a landscape! And if there are contours, lines and colours of the vineyards – even more so! A big thank you to Jošt Gantar and Jaka Ivančič to share the ideas where to go.
Snežnik forest
This is the first autumn photo of the season. Mt Snežnik has an interesting climate, a mix of continental and alpine influences and this is where I go looking for autumn colours first.
Autumn in Slovenia – goodbye!
My last photo trip for autumn colours this season was a short one. Just 20min walk from my parents’ house. I wanted to photograph fog in a forest but these images turned out best. An abandoned farmhouse with a beautiful meadow with apple, pear and walnut trees. Beautiful and sad at the same time. I get same feelings about autumn – the most beautiful season of the year but everything is fading away and bringing cold and darkness for the next few months.
So, if you like this post and images, feel free and share! I will appreciate this very much. And let me know which images you like the most in the comments below. Thank you – Hvala lepa!

Beautiful selection of images captured Luka. I too have experienced Slovenia with my camera this autumn and for the first time too. I have to confess to being completely blown away by the sheer beauty of the country. You have captured a lot of what I have felt these past few weeks. Here’s looking forward to a great winter.
Cheers Melvin. I see you have lots of fun in Slovenia yourself. Quite a journey! I hope you got some useful tips from my writing and PhotoHound. Now let’s all wait for the winter to come!
Great selection, Luka! Your photos are the closest I’m going to get to Slovenia this year, so thank you for sharing. I have a few favorites: the whole Trenta Valley selection, the Kočevsko photos, Kog, Hrastovlje, and Snežnik.
Thanks Curtis! Not being able to travel really sucks. I am lucky to live in a beautiful country but still feel the travel itch. Fingers crossed we can start travelling for winter season! Hope to see you next year.
