Planinsko Polje is a typical Karst field created by the Unica River. When dry, it is a meadow area with a beautiful meandering river. Farmers graze cattle there in the summer. Seasonally, the whole field floods and becomes a huge intermittent lake. This makes it interesting for photography as the trees are all in the water, creating a unique landscape that looks fantastic. Photographers from all around Slovenia come here to photograph it from an elevated viewpoint, up close, and with a drone. I’ve photographed it multiple times, but this time, I’ve added a special twist by shooting from the water itself, in a kayak.
This year, autumn came late. It was already mid-November, but nature was still decked out in full autumnal colors. With a month of constant rain, Planinsko Polje was completely flooded. At this time of year, and with such high water levels, morning fog is a common sight. I decided to try for a sunrise shot and planned to stay at the lake until the sun cleared the fog.
About half an hour before sunrise, I was already out on the lake in my Oru kayak. It was a bit windy, so no reflections yet, and the fog was thick, with near freezing temperatures. Kayaking around was blissful – just me, the sound of numerous birds, and my kayak. Eventually, the wind died down, and I got some beautiful reflections. The conditions were perfect for photography: mists, reflections, and the autumn colors.

Conclusion
Even though the sun didn’t make an appearance that morning, I absolutely loved the experience and managed to capture many fantastic images. I’m confident that some of these will stand the test of time and earn a spot in my portfolio. A couple of them are definitely getting printed for my home and office.
I’d really appreciate your thoughts on my vlog and photos. Your feedback would mean a lot. Thanks so much! And if you liked it, check my Lake Cerknica kayaking vlog and photos too.
