Spring time at Goriška Brda is special. The nature creates a true spectacle with cherry blossoms that dot every single hill of the region. On a sunny days the cherry trees really stand out. Hiking from hill to hill is the best way to enjoy the views and get some amazing photos. This year I visited Brda as a family day trip. Here are the photos and advice where and how to photograph to get the best pictures.
On arrival, we went for a family walk to Višnjevik and Gradno villages and then for a delicious lunch at Šmartno town. Later I met with my friends Jošt and Jaka and we continued photographing until sunset. The locations we covered were Šmartno, Vedrijan and Medana. Lots of great photos for one short afternoon!
Cherry Blossoms Photos
All these photos were taken with my new Nikon Z9 camera. The lenses I used were Nikon Z 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 S and Nikon Z 20mm 1.8 S lens. I really like this camera, it is such an upgrade from my Z7 first gen camera! Yes, it is much bigger and heavier but everything else outweighs these two facts. The AF is more reliable (helps with landscapes too), the screen view modes are cleaner (most obviously the level indicator), the battery life, movement of the back screen and the overall handling.
Here are some photography tips for those keen on photographing cherry blossoms. The first thing to know is WHEN to go. The peak season can vary from year to year but the best bet is to visit in the beginning of April. It pays to check social media for latest images or simply a call somebody local.
Next thing to know is WHERE to go to get the best photos. I recommend checking out PhotoHound. This is a photography community where I shared all my photo locations for Brda, Slovenia and everywhere I have travelled around the world. If you like it, please give back – share some of your favourite photo spots too!
Thank you for reading and good light!
